Welcome to Car and Driver's Testing Hub, where we zoom in on the test numbers. We've been pushing vehicles to their limits since 1956 to provide objective data to bolster our subjective impressions (you can see how we test here).
The Genesis GV60 Magma is, well, red-hot. With up to 641 horsepower under your right foot, the electric crossover is a performance machine. Plus, as we detailed in a recent story, the performance GV60 doesn’t sacrifice any of that performance while in its faux-shifting mode, unlike the mechanically identical Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. In our testing, we found that not only is the GV60 Magma a performance monster, but it shouts like one, too.

At full throttle and set to its Virtual Shift Mode, which simulates an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a 9000-rpm V-6, we recorded the Magma’s interior volume at 102 decibels. That’s considerably louder than the Ioniq 5 N’s 71-dBA max. It’s also louder than a 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray with its 535-hp 6.7-liter V-8. Even when equipped with its optional $5395 quad center-exit exhaust system, the Vette reached a peak of 97 dBA at full chat when we activated its Track mode.
Sure, the Magma’s volume stems from a few lines of code and some speakers masquerading as an engine, while the Corvette has the real thing. But the Magma’s performance is very real, and despite being fake, its simulated shifting and adjustable engine noise are impressive facsimiles.

Jack Fitzgerald’s love for cars stems from his as yet unshakable addiction to Formula 1. After a brief stint as a detailer for a local dealership group in college, he knew he needed a more permanent way to drive all the new cars he couldn’t afford and decided to pursue a career in auto writing. By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver. His new goal is to delay the inevitable demise of his 2010 Volkswagen Golf.
