Overview

Typically, when "$300,000" and "pony" appear in the same sentence, what's likely the subject of discussion is purebred racehorses. The talk, however, could now also be about the Ford Mustang GTD. If its name, ultrawide bodywork, carbon-fiber diffusers, and shade-casting rear wing weren’t dead giveaways, know that the GTD is as close as you can get to an IMSA race car for the road. In fact, with 815 horsepower supplied by a supercharged 5.2-liter V-8, it has far more power than the Mustang GT3 race cars that competed in this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Power is only one aspect of the GTD's expansive performance envelope, and with a carbon fiber body, sophisticated underbody active aerodynamics, and a race-car-derived inboard pushrod suspension setup where a standard 'Stang's rear seats would be, it's no wonder why Ford's ultimate pony is the second fastest production car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. As is usually the case, performance comes at a cost. In the GTD's case, that is both literal and figurative, with its supercar-rivaling MSRP and a dearth of space for either passengers or cargo.

Expert Tip: With 1250 horsepower, a 0-60-mph sprint time of 2.1 seconds, and a starting price $100,000 less than the GTD, the Corvette ZR1X arguably offers a superior performance-to-price ratio than Ford's ultimate Mustang.

We expect that the Ford Mustang GTD will gallop into the 2027 model year without any notable changes.

If this year's model is largely unchanged and you're comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years. A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it'll cost less than buying new.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

With 815 horsepower from its supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 engine, the road-going car has far more power than the Mustang GT3 race car it shares styling with. That track-only model instead uses a 5.4-liter V-8 with around 550 horsepower. Cog swaps for the GTD come courtesy of a rear-mounted eight-speed dual-clutch automated transaxle, similar to the type of gearbox used in the race car.

A Mustang GTD we tested blew us away with its performance. Its shockingly civilized on-road ride quality surprised us as well. We would welcome more steering feedback, but the supremely balanced handling and staggering levels of grip make for a world-class driving experience.

What's Your Car Worth?

Car and Driver calculates your car's value in three free and easy steps - using the same Black Book® data dealers use to appraise vehicles.

0–60-MPH Times

In Comparison: The Mustang GTD is quick, but two other rear-drive rockets, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and Porsche 911 GT3 RS, outran it to 60 mph in our testing, completing that task in 2.2 and 2.7 seconds, respectively.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The Ford Mustang GTD prioritizes lap times over fuel economy, as the roar from its mighty supercharged V-8 quickly reveals. As a result, the GTD only manages a pitiful 10 mpg in the city, 17 mpg on the highway, and 12 mpg combined, according to the EPA. For more information about the Mustang GTD's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: Though it looks every bit like the Mustang GT3 purpose-built race car on the outside, the GTD's cabin looks a lot like any ol' Mustang's. Suede, leather, and carbon fiber are the main ingredients of the GTD's interior that upgrade it from its lesser kin—though not by much. Recaro bucket seats hug both driver and front passenger, but the GTD jettisons the rear seats of other Mustang models. The paddle shifters are 3D-printed from titanium, same for the rotary dial gear selector and serial placard. Ford claims it sourced the material for these components from retired Lockheed Martin F-22 fighter jets.

Cargo Capacity: The trunk is a treasure box of suspension and cooling components, so forget bringing luggage to track-day events.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Mustang GTD packs a 12.4-inch digital gauge cluster and a 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard equipment. Though the system is largely the same as that of other Mustangs, it does include additional GTD-exclusive performance menus.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

As you'd expect of a car like this, the GTD doesn't have many driver-assistance features, but it does have a lane-keep assist system and automatic emergency braking.

For information about the GTD's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The Mustang GTD has a solid but average warranty. However, unlike rival Chevy, Ford doesn't provide a complimentary scheduled maintenance visit.
