The pleaded with the officers, saying he should not be the only one singled out during after he got caught drinking and driving.

While crying uncontrollably after being caught at a road block for drinking and driving, a Greytown man told police that the loss of his political party in the local government elections was the main reason for his behavior.

The man was arrested during a Nenzani La Ezweni operation in Greytown on Friday night.

The man also allegedly pleaded with officers not to single him out, as he claimed “there were other motorists who were drinking and driving to celebrate their parties wins.”

“A SAPS warrant officer, taxi driver, truck driver, and pensioner were also arrested,” said MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma, in a statement on Saturday morning.

“We have received a report from our highly motivated RTI team. Interestingly, a motorist who was arrested for drunk driving in Greytown under Umvoti Local Municipality cried uncontrollably.

“He cited the loss of his political party in the local government elections as the main reason for his drinking and driving behavior.

“He encouraged RTI to intensify the clampdown and Nenzani La Ezweni operations.

“He also pleaded with the officers, saying he should not be the only one singled out, as there were other motorists who were drinking in celebration of the victory of their political parties whilst others like him were drinking to cope with disappointment.”

Duma warned that operations would intensify ahead of the festive season.

He said over 7,110 motorists were arrested in recent weeks.
