P522 Machini road barricaded after Jozini election protest
Traffic has been disrupted along the P522 Machini road in Jozini after members of the Jozini Congress Political allegedly barricaded the road with stones in protest against the outcome of the local government elections in the ward.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) was in the area and working to ensure traffic flow.
In an update on Sunday, Duma said RTI officers were continuously monitoring traffic across the province.
Meanwhile, prolonged heavy rainfall was reported throughout Durban.
The RTI also reported an accident along the N3 in Park Rynie, where a light motor vehicle overturned, leaving one person injured.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution amid the weather conditions and traffic disruptions.
In another incident in KZN, a man arrested for drunk driving broke down in tears and blamed his political party’s loss in the local government elections for his decision to drink and drive.
The man was arrested during a Nenzani La Ezweni operation in Greytown on Friday.
The incident was reported by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport as authorities intensify efforts to combat drunk driving ahead of the festive season.
In a video posted by the department, the motorist is seen crying uncontrollably when confronted following his arrest, citing his party’s electoral defeat as the main reason for his behaviour.
The department said more than 7 110 motorists have been arrested since the launch of the Nenzani La Ezweni Operation.
Duma said the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) would accelerate the operation as the province prepares for the festive season.
The operation is aimed at addressing dangerous driving behaviour and improving road safety as traffic volumes increase during the holiday period.
