The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) says its 2024 national election scenario of leading but not governing will not repeat itself this time around.

Despite the party securing 37% in the 80-member seater KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, it failed to govern the province due to protracted negotiations.

With the party now polling more than 42% of the vote in eThekwini in the 2026 Local Government Elections, questions remain about whether it will be able to secure coalition partners.

Meanwhile, the PAC in Mpumalanga is hoping to obtain several proportional representation seats in different municipalities.

This is despite the party’s failure to obtain even a single ward after more than 70% of votes counted in the early hours of Friday morning.

PAC Provincial Secretary, Richard Maoka attributed their poor performance to intra-party challenges that saw the party miss the 2021 elections.

“What I can say is that the results are not so good for us, but we will get there, we will get seats. The lessons that we have learned is that we must prepare on time. After getting our house in order, it was after 2024, there was a gap year, 2021.”

“Due to some problems within our organisation, we couldn’t register. We said, let us fix our organisation and come back fresh. So, as you are aware now, the PAC is one,” adds Maoka.-Additional reporting by Mthobisi Mkhaliphi
