Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate Helen Zille says she’s optimistic that as the election results continue to trickle in, the party will continue to pull in positive results.

City of Johannesburg is one of the hotly contested municipalities in these local government elections.

Joburg residents have been battling water interruptions, power cuts and waste collection challenges over the years.

Zille says, “We’ve worked as hard as we could; I think the voters have come out and shown that they really want to rescue Joburg. So I’m hoping that we will continue pulling good results.”

The Electoral Commission (IEC) says over 19% of votes have been counted.

On Wednesday, former President Thabo Mbeki warned that South Africa could see more hung municipalities, citing growing political fragmentation.

Zille says if the party fails to get an outright majority, the party will then consider getting into a coalition with the least bad option.

“We are not speaking to anyone as yet. We will see what the options are, any party that doesn’t get 50% there are ussually different options. We are looking at what the different options will be and we will take the least bad option,” she adds.
