With 26% of the voting districts declared in the Eastern Cape province, the ANC is the leading party with almost 50% of the votes, the DA with just over 18% and the SACP with 5%.
The United Democratic Movement and the African Transformation Movement are also making inroads in the province.
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has developed a prediction model based on the results available at this stage. However, the picture is expected to change as more voting districts are declared.
Jabu Mtsweni from the CSIR says, “In the Eastern Cape, we have about 26% of the VDs that have been declared – with the ANC expected to be just under 48% or so. That’s what we are predicting, the DA at 18%, followed by the EFF at about 5.53% and the SACP coming in there as well. Of course to lead or take control in municipality or in the council, you need 50%. So, currently ANC has about 48, so they need about 2% to get over the bridge.”
