Sammy Binfoh Darkwa is making a third attempt to secure the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary ticket for Adansi Asokwa as the party begins its process for selecting candidates ahead of the 2028 General Election.
His latest bid comes as the NPP opens its process for prospective parliamentary candidates to declare their interest in contesting the party’s primaries.
Mr Binfoh previously contested the Adansi Asokwa parliamentary primaries in 2020 and 2024, both times against the constituency’s then-incumbent Member of Parliament, Kobina Tahir Hammond. He lost the 2024 primary to Mr Hammond, who secured 311 votes against his 125.
Mr Binfoh’s latest move follows two unsuccessful attempts to become the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
In 2020, he entered the race against Mr Hammond, who had represented Adansi Asokwa in Parliament since 2001.
He contested again in the party’s 2024 parliamentary primaries, but Mr Hammond retained the nomination after polling 311 votes, while Mr Binfoh received 125 votes.
The NPP lost the Adansi Asokwa parliamentary seat in the 2024 General Election, when the National Democratic Congress’ Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani defeated Mr Hammond.
Mr Dorgbadzi-Dorani polled 14,229 votes against Mr Hammond’s 13,275.
The constituency is therefore among the seats the NPP will be seeking to regain in the 2028 elections.
For Mr Binfoh, the latest bid presents another opportunity to secure the party’s endorsement after previous defeats in the internal contest.
The NPP’s candidate-selection process is expected to determine who will represent the party in its attempt to reclaim the seat.
