More than 600,000 people in central-eastern Ukraine have been left without electricity following a Russian attack on critical infrastructure, according to one of the country’s major energy suppliers.

Private provider DTEK said that the overnight drone attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region had damaged “important facilities,” adding that “the enemy is again massively attacking the energy sector.”

The city of Dnipro and the Pavlograd, Samariva, Kamyansky, Dniprovsky districts have been affected, DTEK said.

“Electric engineers in the region are already working to restore electricity. The work is complicated by repeated attacks,” it added.

Ukraine is facing a potentially tough winter, with Russia expected to keep up its bombardment of energy facilities, deploying ballistic missiles alongside cheaper drones.

The lack of interceptors for the US-made Patriot air defense systems remains a serious issue for the authorities in Kyiv, who have issued repeated appeals to allies to donate weapons amid a global shortage.

Industrial facilities hit

Ukrainian forces managed to down or neutralize 137 of the 164 drones launched by Russia overnight, air force officials said, but hits were recorded in 23 locations, with debris striking the ground in six other places.

One attack caused a fire at an industrial facility in the western Rivne region, destroying one of its buildings, officials said on Sunday morning.
