The proposed Volivo Bridge over the Volta River is expected to improve transportation, expand trade and make essential services more accessible to communities on both sides of the river when completed.

Roads and Highways Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza says the government is committed to delivering the project, which is being pursued through a partnership between Ghana and Japan.

A fresh bidding process was opened on Thursday, November 5, as part of efforts to select a contractor for the construction. Mr Agbodza disclosed that an evaluation team had been established to assess the submissions, with the process expected to be completed within seven days.

He said construction was expected to begin at the start of 2027, expressing confidence that the successful contractor would receive the necessary government support to execute the project.

The Minister described the bridge as an important development in Ghana-Japan relations, saying its construction would provide a lasting demonstration of the cooperation between the two countries.

“We must build this bridge as one of the most concrete pieces of evidence of a cordial and progressive relationship between the people of Ghana and Japan. I think this is the time, and we are confident that we will select a contractor who will have all the support from the government of Ghana to start the project,” he stated.

When completed, the bridge is expected to ease the movement of passengers and goods across the Volta River, improve links between surrounding communities and create better opportunities for commercial activities.
