With 100% of the votes declared for the Merafong Local Municipality in Carletonville, the ANC has received 33,9 % of the votes. This is a decline when compared to the 48,9% of votes it obtained in the 2021 municipal elections.

The DA is in second position with 23% of the votes, with the EFF coming third at 8%.

The municipality has 49 seats. With the ANC having obtained 32% of the votes, this translates into 17 seats, down from the 27 seats it got following the 2021 municipal elections.

The DA comes second with 11 seats, followed in third position by the EFF with 4 seats.

The DA managed to improve its share from the 16% it got in 2021 to 23% this time around.

The EFF has suffered, obtaining only 8% of the votes – a huge decline from the 15% it received in the 2021 municipal elections.

A major political upset has unfolded in Merafong Municipality, where a newly formed community movement has unseated the ANC in one of its traditional strongholds and is now demanding accountability from local government officials.

One Merafong Organisation (OMO), contesting the 2026 Local Government Elections for the first time, has called for the arrest of allegedly corrupt officials in the municipality.

The party’s Secretary General, Buti Mthembu, says residents have endured years of poor service delivery and maladministration.

“This is a symbol that when you work with the people, the community, they will trust you. Now, the community has trusted us with this responsibility. We couldn’t have made it without them. This award goes to all the communities of Merafong who have been suffering under the control of the ANC for many, many years. ANC has been in charge of this ward for all these years. But because they forgot about the very people who voted for them, who put them in power, then we had to come and teach them a lesson that they will never forget. And I can tell you now that the community is on our side. Everybody is excited. They want to see OMO growing. And from here we can only go from strength to strength and show that a true leadership and a true community service, that is what we are going to provide as OMO,” says Mthembu.
