The National Da’awa Council (NADAC) of the Ahlussunna Wal Jama’a (ASWAJ) has officially removed Sheikh Umar Ibrahim Imam from his position as National Imam.

In a press release dated November 4, the Council announced the passing of a Vote of No Confidence against the religious leader, citing constitutional violations and misconduct.

According to the statement, the decision was made pursuant to Article (11)(3) of the ASWAJ Constitution, which empowers the Council to remove the National Imam following a vote of no confidence supported by the required majority.

The Council stated that it had previously issued a notice to Sheikh Umar Ibrahim Imam on October 18, 2026, detailing allegations against him and providing a deadline of October 27, 2026, to respond. However, the Council notes that as of the date of the resolution, no formal written or verbal response was received from the Office of the Imam.

The Vote

The resolution was passed during a meeting of the National Da’awa Council, the body mandated to elect and remove the National Imam and his deputies. Out of the members present, Twenty-one (21) voted in favor of the removal. Four members were recorded as absent: Sheikh Dr. Bashir Adam, Sheikh Zackaria Addo, Sheikh Khidir Adam, and Sheikh Dr. Abbass Sakhr.

Consequential Orders

Following the adoption of the resolution, the Council has declared the office of the National Imam vacant. Several consequential orders have been issued to ensure a smooth transition:

  1. Handover: Sheikh Umar Ibrahim Imam is required to hand over all ASWAJ properties, official documents, stamps, records, and other institutional assets to the appropriate authorized officer immediately.
  2. Notification: Relevant registration authorities, financial institutions, and stakeholders are to be formally notified of the change in leadership.
  3. Succession: Arrangements are to be made for the election of a substantive National Imam in accordance with the ASWAJ Constitution.

Call for Calm

Concluding the press release, the National Da’awa Council called on all members and stakeholders of ASWAJ to remain calm and uphold the Constitution.

“The Council calls on all members and stakeholders… to preserve peace, unity, and the integrity of the organization,” the statement read.

The development marks a significant shift in the leadership of the organization, effective immediately as of November 4, 2026.
