The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape says it is preparing for a possible coalition government to ensure continued service delivery, while acknowledging its electoral shortcomings.

The party lost several wards and council seats in Buffalo City Metro, King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality and several municipalities under the Sarah Baartman District.

It says these losses serve as a moment of reflection ahead of future elections.

ANC Provincial Chairperson Oscar Mabuyane says the party’s electoral performance should not be blamed on any individual, but should be seen as an expression of democracy and the people’s will.

“The coalitions are not yet discussed, and we’ll be able to attribute whatever fortune or misfortune when we’ve received a comprehensive report, and they’ve done a proper analysis. You know, in Sarah Baartman, Afrikaans-speaking people are the majority.”

“We tend to think that they are minorities. They are minority elsewhere … they are majority there. As long as our attitude and our posture don’t appreciate and recognise that, you definitely have challenges,” adds Mabuyane.
