The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) is hoping the IEC can resolve its concerns about alleged irregularities it says it picked up in the electoral process.

The party has formally lodged an objection with the commission alleging system failures and discrepancies between captured results and physical result slips, as well as irregularities in the counting, verification, and reconciliation process, particularly in eThekwini.

MKP President Jacob Zuma is scheduled to hold a briefing on the matter later.

The party’s Head of Elections, Lei Mchunu, says, “We applied for condonation in terms of the closing time because, remember, all the objections were supposed to be closed yesterday on the 6th, but because of these discrepancies and this unhappiness reflection that we see, we have applied for it honestly so that we can engage the IEC in a peaceful manner. How can we move together? And MKP has a right to also say that the elections were free and fair, but at this time we are questioning the integrity of the IEC.”
