The all-new Audi RS 5 is Audi South Africa's first high-performance plug-in hybrid RS production model, combining a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 with an electric motor to produce 470kW and 825Nm.

Audi South Africa has introduced the all-new Audi RS 5, marking a milestone for the German manufacturer as it brings its first high-performance plug-in hybrid RS production model to market.

Available in both Sedan and Avant body styles, the new RS 5 combines a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined 470kW and 825Nm of torque.

The performance hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds, while offering an electric driving range of between 78km and 84km.

Audi says the new model demonstrates how electrification can enhance performance, combining the response of electric power with the character of its V6 engine.

Audi RS 5 combines V6 power with plug-in hybrid technology

For the first time in an Audi RS production model, the 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 is paired with an electric motor.

Power is delivered through an eight-speed tiptronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive, providing traction and power distribution across different driving conditions.

The lithium-ion battery has a usable capacity of 22kWh and supports AC charging at up to 11kW. The battery can also be charged through energy recuperation technology.

Drivers can choose between EV and Hybrid operating modes. EV mode allows the vehicle to run solely on electric power, while Hybrid mode combines the combustion engine and electric motor.

The system also features a boost function, which delivers maximum acceleration for 10 seconds at the push of a button. Audi says the function can be activated in any drive select mode.

The RS 5 has an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h as standard. Customers opting for the Audi Sport package can increase this to 285km/h.

New quattro technology focuses on handling and control

Beyond its powertrain, the new RS 5 introduces an advanced quattro drivetrain featuring Dynamic Torque Control.

The system incorporates what Audi describes as the world's first electromechanical torque vectoring system at the rear axle of a production vehicle.

It allows torque to be distributed between the rear wheels, adapting to driving conditions and driver inputs to improve cornering agility, traction and stability.

The drivetrain works alongside an RS sport suspension system featuring twin-valve shock absorbers.

Through Audi drive select, drivers can choose between different driving characteristics, including balanced, dynamic and RS sport modes.

An additional RS torque rear mode is designed for controlled driving environments and is approved exclusively for use on closed courses.

Sedan and Avant bring distinctive RS styling

The new Audi RS 5 will be offered in two body styles: Sedan and Avant.

Both feature muscular proportions, sculpted bodywork and RS-specific styling details. Compared with the standard A5, the RS 5 is widened by four centimetres on each side, both front and rear.

Exterior features include a distinctive Singleframe grille, pronounced air intakes, centrally positioned RS exhaust outlets with matte oval tailpipes and a rear diffuser featuring a vertically positioned red reflector.

Exterior colour options include Progressive Red, Ascari Blue, Daytona Grey, Plateau Grey and Mythos Black. Bedford Green is available exclusively with the Audi Sport package.
