The mayor of Río Bravo, a Mexican city across the border from Texas, is reported kidnapped. Officials are searching the border zone between two Mexican states, and many basic facts remain unconfirmed.

Miguel Ángel Almaraz Maldonado, mayor of Río Bravo in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, is reported as the victim of a suspected kidnapping. Tamaulipas is a state in north-east Mexico that borders Texas.

San Luis Potosí’s state security ministry (Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana, SSPCE) said on Sunday 8 November 2026 that its civil guard is working to locate the people involved. Río Bravo sits across the border from Texas, near Reynosa, a Mexican border city, and McAllen, a Texas city, so the case matters to US residents and travellers near that border.

What We Know

The SSPCE said that, on first data, the alleged abduction took place in Zacatecas, a central Mexican state, on the highway between San Tiburcio and Vanegas. The people affected were abandoned on the road, asked for help and reached Cedral, a town in San Luis Potosí.

The Guardia Civil Estatal, San Luis Potosí’s state civil guard, set up an operation in the border zone between San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas. It is coordinating with Zacatecas authorities and other bodies to locate the people involved.

The ministry described the case as a “presunta privación ilegal de la libertad”, meaning an alleged illegal deprivation of liberty. In plain terms, that is a suspected kidnapping.

Elefante Blanco, a Tamaulipas news outlet, reported that his family was with him and was released at the site, and early information said they were heading to Real de Catorce, a town in San Luis Potosí. The San Luis Potosí ministry says the people affected were left on the road, and they reached Cedral to ask for help.

Elefante Blanco reports that armed men in two pickup trucks stopped the group on Saturday 7 November 2026, citing judicial sources. Officials have not confirmed that account.

What Is Not Known

No official source has confirmed where the mayor is. Jesús Govea Orozco, state attorney general of Tamaulipas, said he had no conclusive information and could not rule out a kidnapping.

Also unknown are who took him, the motive and how many people were in the group. Any ransom demand and any arrests have not been reported either.

One Mexican outlet reported unofficially that he regained his freedom around 22:00 on Saturday. Neither the San Luis Potosí ministry nor any other official source has confirmed that, so we treat it as unverified.

Who Is Miguel Ángel Almaraz

Almaraz belongs to the National Action Party (PAN), an opposition conservative party. He won the Río Bravo mayor’s office in 2024, backed by the Fuerza y Corazón por Tamaulipas coalition.

That coalition united the PAN, the Institutional Revolutionary Party and the Party of the Democratic Revolution. Elefante Blanco describes him as politically and legally at odds with Tamaulipas governor Américo Villarreal Anaya and with Morena, Mexico’s ruling party.

These are the outlet’s descriptions. Nothing reported so far establishes a motive.

What It Means for Travelers and US Readers

Río Bravo lies across the border from Texas, in the same broader region as Reynosa (Mexico) and McAllen (Texas). A case involving an elected border official draws attention from residents, businesses and travellers who follow security there.

The city shares its name with the river that Americans call the Rio Grande. That river marks the border between Texas and Mexico at that point.

We know of no change to any travel advisory linked to this case. Anyone planning border travel should check official government guidance and local conditions before setting out.

Security on the northern border is a recurring story. Our earlier report, Girl Dies as Cartel Blockades Matamoros, covered a cartel blockade in another Tamaulipas border city.

Our Mexico coverage follows the wider security and political picture. We will report confirmed developments as officials release them.

The next signals will be official: confirmation of the mayor’s whereabouts and statements from Tamaulipas or Zacatecas authorities. Until then, the search in the border zone between San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas is the main thing to watch.
