Feeling the heat, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has intensified its efforts to portray Punjab as a model of transparency and accountability, seeking to counter allegations of corruption levelled against the Maryam Nawaz-led government by a coalition partner.
Moreover, an adjournment motion was submitted in the Punjab Assembly on Saturday, by opposition member Waqas Mahmood, demanding full details of the travel and accommodation expenses from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's recent visit to London.
During a television talk show few days ago, PML-Q leader Chaudhry Salik Hussain criticised the Punjab government, claimed he regularly heard complaints of corruption, alleged that development funds were disproportionately channeled toward Lahore, and questioned lavish government spending like the use of official aircraft.
Senior party figures defended the provincial government's anti-corruption record and contrasting its governance with the state of development projects in Karachi.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari on Saturday claimed that Punjab was the only province taking practical action against corruption rather than merely making statements.
In a statement, Bukhari said the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Punjab was functioning as a transparent institution, while strict departmental action was being taken against corrupt officials across provincial departments.
"There is neither favouritism nor bribery in Punjab," she claimed.
Separately, in a post on social media platform X, the provincial information minister said Punjab was the only province where the chief minister herself was holding corrupt elements accountable while demonstrating zero tolerance towards corruption.
"There is a difference between corruption taking place and corruption being detected. Transparency and oversight are being ensured across every sector, which is why public money is being spent exclusively on serving the people."
"This is visible on the ground and, God willing, will continue to be so," Azma added.
Meanwhile, addressing journalists at the Lahore Press Club's Meet the Press programme, Sindh Governor Nehal Hashmi said those responsible for delays in Karachi's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects should learn from Punjab.
He maintained that the responsibility of state institutions was to hold people accountable for corruption rather than initiate proceedings merely to appease someone.
"Those who were supposed to deliver for Karachi have failed to do so. Karachi has suffered considerable injustice. Those delaying development projects in Karachi should learn from Lahore and Multan," he said.
Hashmi said there was no government more transparent than the Punjab government.
