The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has called on political parties the citizens to exercise patience and refrain from sharing unverified elections results as vote counting continues.

According to IEC, 15,9 million citizens took part in the local government elections.

The electoral commission has received over 800 complaints as of Wednesday, of which majority of the complaints relate to the conduct of the voting stations staff and party agents.

IEC Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Masego Shiburi says, “The majority of those complaints have been closed and determined. About 106 complaints remain open.”

Shiburi says candidates have until tomorrow afternoon to lodge complaints.

“There is an opportunity for contestants to raise objections that are material to the outcome of the declared results.”

The IEC says it will release the final as soon as all objections have been dealt with.

Early this morning, the African National Congress (ANC) took control of the first council to be declared by the Electoral Commission, as vote counting continues around the country.

The ANC has taken the Renosterberg Council in the Northern Cape and was leading in another three.
