The Electoral Commission has dismissed concerns by the MK Party that more than 200 deceased people appear on the voters’ roll.
IEC Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Mawethu Mosery says names of people who died after the voters’ roll was certified may still appear as registered voters, as they were alive when the roll was finalised.
Mosery says all voters are still required to present valid identification documents at voting stations before they can cast their ballots. “It is possible to find names of people who may have passed on between the certification of the voters role and now, because at the time we finalised the voters role, they were still living individuals who would have presented themselves to the voting stations and vote. Therefore, those names would be on the valid side of the voter’s role. But if you look at our vulture’s role, you will find that at the rejected section, which is at the back of the voter’s role, there are names of rejected persons, and some of them are rejected because they are deceased.
