Chris Pappas of the Democratic Alliance is set to be re-elected as mayor of the uMngeni local council in KwaZulu-Natal.
With 91% of the voting districts declared in the area, the DA has won almost 62% of the vote.
The uMkhonto we Sizwe Party (MKP) is second on 18%, followed by the African National Congress (ANC) with 15%.
SABC News elections analyst Professor Susan Booysen says Pappas is one of the reasons for the party’s success within the municipality.
“In uMngeni, we see that the DA and its very popular candidate Chris Pappas are available, and Chris Pappas has got an enormous profile in the community. He speaks the language, he mixes the culture, he sings in the community and gets things right for the community. So, I’m not surprised that he comes out very popular.”
