Overview

The Lotus Evija is a marvel of modern engineering, and not just for its astonishing acceleration, its stunning looks, or its incredible 2012 horsepower rating. Its genius lies in its ability to package heavy electric-vehicle powertrain equipment inside without abandoning the lightweight nature that Lotus’s sports cars are known for.

A torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system helps get that enormous power to the asphalt, resulting in what we estimate will be a 1.8-second 60 mph time. This hypercar’s cabin also positions all of its key controls around the driver and minimizes distractions by forgoing traditional infotainment and driver-assistance features altogether. Unfortunately, even the mega-rich can't drive one in America outside of a race track, as it's not legal for U.S. roads.

Expert Tip: The Evija competes in the upper echelons of the hypercar market, vying for the attention of billionaire buyers alongside rivals such as the Aston Martin Valhalla, the Ferrari F80, and the McLaren W1. Unlike those cars, though, the Evija is not street legal in the United States.

What's New for 2027?

The Evija rolls into 2027 without any significant updates.

If this year's model is largely unchanged and you're comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years. A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it'll cost less than buying new.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The Evija's electric powertrain is comprised of four electric motors that generate a total output of 2012 horsepower and 1257 pound-feet of torque. That's almost double the horsepower provided by hypercars such as the Aston Martin Valkyrie. A single-speed automatic transmission governs it all, sending power to all four wheels. The car's relatively light curb weight is designed to optimize handling. The company claims the Evija weighs in at around 4200 pounds, making it supposedly the lightest EV hypercar to enter production.

The car's performance can be customized via five driving modes: Range, City, Tour, Sport, and Track. On our test drive of the Evija, we were gobsmacked by its awesome power and nimble demeanor. Unlike some performance EVs that have a rock-solid brake pedal feel, the Evija’s carbon-ceramic brakes provide astonishing stopping power and can be easily modulated. We also enjoyed its hydraulic power steering, which provided more feedback than almost every other high-powered EV currently available.

0–60-MPH Times

In Comparison: We estimate that the Evija will be capable of hitting 60 mph in just 1.8 seconds. That puts it in contention with our estimated 60-mph time for the equally exotic electric Rimac Nevera. One car that actually went that quickly is the 1250-hp hybrid Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, which scorched its way to 60 mph in 1.8 seconds in our track testing.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

Lotus claims that the Evija takes a mere 18 minutes to juice from 10 to 80 percent on a 350-kW charger. Lotus said it expects its hypercar to deliver a 195-mile driving range. When we drove a prototype Evija on track back in 2021, we emptied its fully charged battery in just 15 minutes. That figure might be improved for the production model, but full-tilt driving is sure to zap range significantly.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

Since the Evija isn't street-legal, it's unlikely the EPA will estimate its fuel efficiency. We're sure exactly none of the über-rich car enthusiasts who will be able to buy one will care.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: The Lotus Evija seats two passengers, and its cabin is accessed via a pair of dihedral doors. The Evija's electrically adjustable front seats feature a carbon-fiber shell and thick pads swathed in microfiber. The driver can manually adjust the tilt and length of the steering column, and there are two bespoke storage spaces placed close to the occupants' hip points.

Cargo Capacity: There is no trunk or frunk in the Evija, and storage opportunities are limited inside the cabin. This is not a car for road trips or grocery-getting.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All Evijas come with tech features such as Bluetooth connectivity and an infotainment system. In front of the steering wheel, there's a digital display that provides the driver with pertinent information like battery charge and remaining range. This is the car's only screen.

The Evija comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, and Lotus has installed an onboard modem that facilitates connection to the cloud. A smartphone app is available that allows drivers to monitor the Evija from any location, checking on things such as battery charge status and driving range.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Evija offers no traditional driver-assistance features such as lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, or automated emergency braking.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Lotus doesn't offer a particularly impressive limited or powertrain warranty. The company also doesn't include any complimentary scheduled maintenance.

C/D Test Results and Specs

Each year, we put hundreds of vehicles through our rigorous instrumented testing regimen. If the data in the chart below is for a different model year, that's because this vehicle hasn't changed since we last tested it, and the test results remain accurate.
