With the final results of the 2026 Local Government Elections trickling in, the South African Communist Party (SACP) says it will meet on Monday to reflect on whom it will enter into coalition with across the various municipalities. The party has won a total of approximately 226 seats nationally, with just 3% of the national vote left to count. In the Eastern Cape, the SACP secured 89 seats, 26 in Mpumalanga, 45 in Limpopo and 20 in the North West. SACP General Secretary Solly Mapaila says, “There is no automatic support for any single party. After the conference of the left, we established the council of the left. We will convene that meeting as soon as possible with various left forces that participated in this election to discuss a common agenda of the left forces, but of course we have our own pillars that are non-negotiable, as the SACP, about services to our communities, direct budgeting to our communities; those are important areas that we will be discussing with various forces. But our Politburo will be meeting on Monday to finalise the process. It will be led by Deputy General Secretary Comrade Madala Masuku.”
