Krakow Market Square attack
The statement follows a mass shooting on Saturday afternoon in Krakow’s historic Main Market Square, where a gunman opened fire on weekend crowds, killing six people and wounding 15 others.
The assault unfolded around 3 p.m. local time when a vehicle entered the pedestrian perimeter of the square at high speed. A masked assailant stepped out of the vehicle and discharged a long-barreled firearm into the crowds, prompting pedestrians and tourists to flee into nearby cafes, restaurants, and residential doorways for shelter.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk classified the mass shooting as an unprecedented act of terrorism during an evening press briefing in Warsaw.
“Until now in Poland we have not seen such brutal acts of terrorism, because that is precisely how this brutal assault on human life in Krakow must be called,” Tusk said.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki declared two days of national mourning across the country for Nov. 8-9, with presidential spokesperson Rafał Leszkiewicz confirming that Nawrocki signed the official decree on Saturday evening.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry confirmed that no Ukrainian citizens were killed or injured during the shooting.
The detained gunman holds Polish citizenship. Katarzyna Cislo, spokesperson for the Malopolska Voivodeship Police Command in Krakow, said that the perpetrator wore a military uniform and possessed tactical combat equipment.
“He was wearing a military uniform and had military-pattern long-barreled weapons,” Cislo said. “It was likely a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle. Other weapons and ammunition were also seized from his vehicle.”
In the vehicle’s trunk, police recovered a military backpack, tactical pouches, additional firearms, ammunition, and a bayonet.
