The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) in Tshwane says officials are working around the clock to verify election results before releasing them.
The commission has reiterated its commitment to a transparent process, with political parties allowed to observe proceedings.
Meanwhile, vote counting in Gauteng has reached 59 %, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) leading on 34 %, followed by the African National Congress (ANC ) on 21 % and ActionSA on 17 %.
IEC spokesperson Jeffrey Mokoene says fatigue remains one of the biggest challenges facing counting staff.
“The major challenge we are currently facing is fatigue, as colleagues have been working tirelessly since Wednesday to ensure the accuracy of the results. There are specific processes that must be followed to ensure credible results.”
“Firstly, each results slip from the voting station must undergo quality assurance. Secondly, once verified, the results slip must be scanned into the system for public viewing. These are the processes we have put in place.”
