“The triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance," is the central theme of all Hindu (Santhana Dharama) festivals and celebrations.
The prominent celebrations of this theme are Diwali, symbolised by the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after vanquishing Ravana, Lord Krishna killing Narakasura, Mother Kali killing Mahishasura and the blessings of prosperity and wealth by Mother Laxmi.
We believe in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The whole world is one family). Today we experience the interconnectedness of the world and the adverse effects of world leaders who are openly, unapologetically consumed by temptation and greed and use the most trivial excuse to justify conflict and destruction for self-enrichment at the expense of other beings.
In keeping with the theme of Diwali, we call on all the parties in conflict around the world to find a way to make peace, because in all conflicts, the majority suffer and a few selfish leaders profit. It is a time to choose a peaceful resolution to all conflicts, because “The whole world is one family”, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
The Ramayana also reminds us of the scourge of gender-based violence and gender discrimination in the abduction of Mother Sita, but Sita’s inner strength and adherence to dharma are revealed in her resistance to the temptations offered by Ravana.
Let us be the voice of righteousness as we act against such violence and discrimination and restore Luxmi, that light to shine brightly in society.
The life of Maharishi Valmiki the author of the Ramayana, who underwent a profound spiritual transformation from being the highway robber Ratnakar after reciting Rama’s name, reminds us that no matter what our past actions are we can transform our life and overcome our vices by the acceptance of the divine, and lead a moral, ethical life.
We invite you to engage in introspection about how you can make a positive change to your individual live and that of your family, community, country and the world. T
