The Electoral Commission Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo says the successful delivery of the elections required extensive planning, coordination and resources, involving thousands of activities carried out within strict legal and operational deadlines.

From staffing and logistics to technology and results management, Mamabolo says the process tested the commission’s preparedness and operational capacity at every level.

He also notes that the elections unfolded under intense scrutiny from the Electoral Court, political parties, election observers, the media and the public, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability in safeguarding South Africa’s democratic process.

“The conclusion of the 2026 local government elections provides an important opportunity for the Commission to provide an account, not only for the voting process but also for the operational capacity, technological infrastructure, human resource capacity, institutional systems that made these elections possible.

“An election of this magnitude is one of the most complex operations undertaken by a public institution. It requires coordination of thousands of activities, the deployment of substantial human capital and material resources, the integration of sophisticated technological systems, the management of extensive logistical operations and the application of rigorous administrative controls. All these activities must converge and coalesce within a defined election timetable under the scrutiny of the electoral court, political contestants, the media, observers, but ultimately the citizens of our country,” Mamabolo explains.
