Looking for a night out with a difference? November’s theatre line-up offers everything from live piano and personal storytelling to spine-tingling suspense and a much-loved musical.
Three productions are taking to stages in Stellenbosch, Somerset West and Camps Bay, giving theatre lovers a choice of intimate performances, ghostly drama and fairy-tale adventures.
Christof van der Berg brings Stories en Sterre to Stellenbosch
Born on a family salt farm near Petrusburg in the Free State, South African pianist, singer and writer Christof van der Berg has built a career performing in South Africa and abroad.
A talented pianist from a young age, he won an international piano competition in Hollywood at just 16. Since then, he has explored music, theatre and visual art through various creative projects.
He brings these experiences to Stories en Sterre (Stories and Stars), a one-man production at the Drostdy Theatre in Stellenbosch.
Combining live piano, singing and storytelling, Van der Berg shares memories of his upbringing, relationships and the experiences that have shaped his life.
The performance features his original compositions alongside familiar international songs.

The Woman in Black brings ghostly suspense to Somerset West
A creaking door, an unsettling silence and the feeling that someone is watching are at the heart of The Woman in Black, a ghost story that relies on atmosphere and the audience's imagination rather than elaborate special effects.
The story follows young solicitor Arthur Kipps, who travels to the isolated Eel Marsh House to settle the estate of Mrs Drablow.
His discovery of a mysterious woman dressed in black sets off a series of disturbing events.
Years later, still haunted by his experience, Kipps enlists an actor to help him tell his story. What begins as a rehearsal soon takes a frightening turn.

Directed by Sylvaine Strike, with musical direction by Amy Campbell, the musical follows a Baker and his wife as they venture into the forest to break a witch’s curse.
