A ProPublica investigation reports that the Trump administration is considering awarding nearly one million dollars to South African civil rights organisation AfriForum to investigate alleged discrimination and violence against Afrikaners and other minorities.
The American nonprofit newsroom, citing sources familiar with the proposal, says the funding would come from the US State Department’s human rights budget. In that report, AfriForum indicated that no allocation had been finalised.
According to ProPublica, the proposed grant of 986 500 United States Dollars would come from the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour. The investigative newsroom reports that the money was initially intended for Lex Libertas, an organisation founded by former AfriForum executive Ernst Roets, before an application process was announced.
ProPublica cites sources identifying AfriForum as the intended recipient, although the organisation says no funding decision has been finalised. The report also quotes Democratic lawmakers raising concerns about transparency in the process. The State Department has not publicly confirmed the proposed award.
