The latest round of fixtures began on Friday at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, where Kano Pillars were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Kun Khalifat despite taking the lead through substitute Sikiru Alimi.
Alimi, introduced alongside Ahmed Musa in the 57th minute, made an immediate impact on the contest and fired the visitors ahead in the 76th minute with a fine effort from outside the penalty area. However, Kano Pillars’ hopes of claiming their first away win ended as the 9 chances ended Pillars’ unbeaten run to four matches and moved them to 19 points from 12 games, keeping them firmly involved in the battle near the top of the table. Kun Khalifat, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their late response as they continue their fight to move away from the lower end of the standings.
With that encounter out of the way, attention now shifts to Sunday’s fixtures, followed by two more matches on Monday and Tuesday. There is plenty at stake, particularly for the teams competing for the top positions, with Enugu Rangers, Rivers United and the chasing sides all facing important tests.
Rangers look to consolidate their position against Kwara United
Rangers International will have the opportunity to strengthen their grip on the top spot when they welcome Kwara United to the Awka Township Stadium on Sunday (today).
The Flying Antelopes moved to 21 points from 10 matches following their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bendel Insurance in a rescheduled fixture on Wednesday, with Chidozie Iwundu’s controversial second-half header settling the contest.
That result put Rangers three points clear of the chasing pack, although they have played fewer matches than several of their closest rivals. Their impressive start has put them in a strong position, but Fidelis Ilechukwu’s men cannot afford to take their foot off the pedal with the season still in its early stages.

Kwara United, on the other hand, arrive in Awka needing a response after suffering a 2-1 home defeat to Bendel Insurance in their previous outing. The Harmony Boys have struggled to maintain consistency and will know another setback could leave them further adrift of the leading contenders.
Rangers will be favourites, particularly with their home advantage, but Kwara United will believe they do have enough motivation to make this an uncomfortable afternoon for the league leaders.

Bendel Insurance seek response against Niger Tornadoes
Bendel Insurance will be eager to return to winning ways when they host Niger Tornadoes at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
The Benin Arsenal suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Rangers in their rearranged Matchday 9 encounter, a result ending their potential chance to overtake the league leaders. They remain among the leading contenders, however, and will see Sunday’s fixture as an important opportunity to get their campaign back on track.
Niger Tornadoes will not be travelling to Benin merely to make up the numbers. The Ikon Allah Boys have been one of the competitive sides in the early weeks of the campaign and remain within touching distance of the top positions.
With both teams separated by just a few points, the encounter carries significant importance in the battle for early-season supremacy. Bendel will look to make home advantage count, while Niger Tornadoes will be hoping to frustrate their hosts and take something back to Minna.
Barau FC and Shooting Stars Set for Kano Battle
Barau FC welcome Shooting Stars to the Sani Abacha Stadium in what promises to be one of the most interesting fixtures of the weekend.
The Kano-based side have remained competitive in their first campaign at this level and will be keen to use home advantage to strengthen their position in the top half of the table.
Shooting Stars, meanwhile, head into the contest with renewed confidence after one of their most convincing performances of the season, thrashing Abia Warriors 4-1 in Ibadan.
The Oluyole Warriors showed their attacking potential in that encounter and will hope to carry the same energy into Kano. Their challenge, however, will be to reenact that level of performance against a Barau side determined to protect its home ground.
With both teams looking to climb the standings, the outcome could hsignificantly affecttheir respective ambitions.
Nasarawa United face Plateau United in top-half clash
Nasarawa United and Plateau United will renew their rivalry at the Lafia City Stadium, with both sides looking to strengthen their positions among the leading teams.
The Solid Miners suffered a 2-0 defeat to Kano Pillars in their last outing, bringing an end to their positive run. They will be determined to respond in front of their supporters and avoid allowing another result to affect their momentum.
Plateau United also dropped points in their previous fixture, playing out a 1-1 draw against Warri Wolves in Jos. The Peace Boys have shown flashes of quality this season but will need greater consistency if they are to sustain a challenge near the top of the table.
With Nasarawa United sitting on 17 points and Plateau United on 16 before the weekend’s fixtures, there is little separating the sides. A victory for either team could provide a valuable boost in the race for the top positions.
The encounter is expected to be closely contested, with both sides aware of the importance of avoiding another setback.

Warri Wolves and Katsina United target maximum points
Warri Wolves will host Katsina United at the Southern Delta University Stadium, with both clubs seeking an important result as the campaign progresses.
The Seasiders earned a point in their previous match after holding Plateau United to a 1-1 draw in Jos. While the result offered some encouragement, they will be looking to turn that resilience into a home victory.
Katsina United arrive with confidence after defeating Sporting Lagos 2-1, thanks to another influential performance from Luis Dadong, who has been among the team’s important attacking contributors.
The Katsina-based side have collected 16 points and remains within reach of the leading pack, while Warri Wolves will be eager to improve their position after a mixed start to the campaign.
Katsina United will fancy their chances of getting a result, but the home side will be determined to make life difficult for their visitors.
Abia Warriors must respond against Doma United
Abia Warriors face another important test when they welcome Doma United to the Enyimba Stadium in Aba.
The Umuahia-based side are coming off a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Shooting Stars in Ibadan, a result that exposed their defensive weaknesses and left them needing an immediate response.
They will hope that returning to familiar surroundings provides the lift required to rediscover their winning form. However, Doma United will present a difficult challenge.
The Gombe-based side shared the points with Ikorodu City after a 2-2 draw in their previous outing and have remained competitive despite a number of demanding fixtures.
With Doma United sitting on 15 points and Abia Warriors on 10 in the relegation places, the hosts have plenty of work to do to close the gap. They will need a much-improved defensive display and greater efficiency in front of goal to claim maximum points.
For Doma United, the objective will be to take advantage of Abia Warriors’ recent struggles and strengthen their position in the top half.
Ranchers Bees and Enyimba battle for crucial Points
Ranchers Bees will welcome Enyimba to the Bako Kontagora Stadium, with both sides desperate to build momentum and move away from the lower end of the standings.
Ranchers Bees played out a 1-1 draw with Inter Lagos in their previous match, a result that offered some relief but did little to change their position in the bottom half.
Enyimba, meanwhile, secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Kun Khalifat through Tobi Iyanda’s early goal, giving the Aba giants a much-needed boost after a difficult start to the season.
The People’s Elephant will hope that the victory marks the beginning of a stronger run, but they must be prepared for a difficult away assignment against a Ranchers Bees side that will be desperate to make home advantage count.
For both clubs, the importance of this fixture goes beyond three points. Another positive result could provide the confidence needed to turn their respective campaigns around.

Ikorodu City host Inter Lagos in Lagos Derby
The Matchday 12 action continues on Monday when Ikorodu City welcome Inter Lagos to the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan.
The Oga boys will be looking to return to winning ways after sharing the points in a 2-2 draw against Doma United last time out. The Bright Ozagbe-tutored side have shown they can com of the league’s established sides, but they will need to convert more of their opportunities if they are to climb further up the table.
Inter Lagos, meanwhile, remain at the foot of the standings following a difficult start to life in the top flight. They played out a 1-1 draw against Ranchers Bees in their previous outing, but their points deduction has left them with little room for error.
The Lagos derby offers a chance to deliver a statement performance, while Ikorodu City will be keen to avoid dropping points against their city rivals in the derby.
The fixture also carries local bragging rights, adding another layer of significance to an encounter both teams will be eager to win.
Rivers United fixture postponed
Rivers United will not be in action during the scheduled Matchday 12 programme after their fixture against Sporting Lagos at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena was postponed.
The Port Harcourt club had been among the early pacesetters and will be looking to maintain their challenge when the rescheduled encounter is eventually played.
Their absence from this weekend’s action gives the other contenders an opportunity to make ground in the standings, although Rangers remain in a strong position following their victory over Bendel Insurance.

The race for NPFL Supremacy intensifies
With Kano Pillars already held to a draw in Owerri, Matchday 12 has begun with another reminder of how difficult it is to collect maximum points in the NPFL.
The 1-1 result against Kun Khalifat took Pillars to 19 points, but the attention now shifts to Rangers, Bendel Insurance, Nasarawa United, and the other challengers as they seek to strengthen their positions.
Rangers have the opportunity to consolidate their advantage at the summit, while the chasing sides know that dropped points could make the gap increasingly difficult to bridge.
At the other end of the table, the pressure is also mounting on clubs struggling to find consistency. For them, every fixture is becoming increasingly important as they look to avoid being dragged into an early relegation battle.
With several compelling match-ups across the country, Matchday 12 promises another weekend of intense competition, crucial points and potentially significant movement in the 2026/27 NPFL standings.
