The Democratic Alliance (DA) is declaring an early victory in the City of Cape Town, with party leader and mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, projecting that the party has secured approximately 58% of the vote.
Latest provisional results put the DA ahead with approximately 61.3% of the vote, well ahead of the ANC, which is trailing with 11.2%.
Hill-Lewis says he is looking forward to serving another term as mayor, following what he describes as a resounding mandate from voters.
Hill-Lewis says, “Collection of all the data from all of the voting stations where you all worked late into last night went into this morning. We can now project that our results in the City of Cape Town will be around 58% for the DA. As Angus said, I think we need to say it again: ons het gewen! We won!”
“Before we say anything else, we must remember that the most important and biggest thanks in this result goes to every resident of Cape Town who showed up to vote yesterday. I want to start by saying we are so grateful to every DA supporter who came out yesterday, put in the energy to queue in long lines, waited until well after nine o’clock last night in some places and cast their vote for the DA. They gave us a resounding, resounding endorsement. And we must always be grateful to them. The people of Cape Town, a huge round of applause. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Cape Town. It has been such an honour and a privilege to serve as your mayor for these last five years. And I can’t wait to serve as your mayor again”, he says.
