A clip depicting the alleged assault has been circulated on social media.
The alleged assault of a motorcycle delivery driver by a police officer in Thlabane has prompted a criminal investigation and a departmental probe, with North West police commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams condemning the incident.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday afternoon, November 7, 2026, and a video depicting the altercation has since circulated on social media.
The 33-year-old delivery driver has opened a criminal case of assault and crimen injuria, which is currently under investigation.
In a statement, SAPS said Adams had noted the incident with serious concern, particularly as the police officer was allegedly dressed in civilian clothes.
The provincial commissioner condemned any form of violence, intimidation or abuse of authority by police members, emphasising that officers are expected to protect communities, uphold the law and treat everyone with dignity and respect.
Adams has also directed that the circumstances surrounding the incident be investigated internally.
SAPS said appropriate steps would be taken against the officer if the investigation established that misconduct or a violation of the law had occurred.
“We have a responsibility to serve and protect all members of our communities. Any conduct that compromises this responsibility, undermines the rights of individuals or brings the name of the Service into disrepute will be addressed through the appropriate processes,” Adams said.
“We will not shield any member found to have acted outside the law or violated the code of conduct.”
The provincial commissioner has appealed to members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its course.
