The African National Congress (ANC) is facing declining electoral support in parts of the Sarah Baartman District in the Eastern Cape.
The party has lost its outright majority in four municipalities in the district.
One of those municipalities where the ANC faced electoral decline is the embattled Makana Municipality based in Makhanda, which is one of the strongholds of the party in the region.
The ANC’s support dropped from 13 seats in council to 10.

ANC Regional Chair for Sarah Baartman, Mabhuti Matyumza, says regardless of the stats, they still have the support and confidence of their constituents.
“We are happy with what we have received, given the current challenges that we’re facing on the ground. I think I’m very happy with our performance in some municipalities. Of course, we are not contesting alone; we are contesting with other political parties, and I can assure you that the confidence that has been actually shown by people across Sarah Baartman, they’ve affirmed that the ANC is still a reliable force to be trusted moving forward,” says Matyumza.
